When Twitter works

Yesterday we talked about the Rocky Mountain News "twittering" the funeral of a 3 year old. I think most of us concluded that it wasn't a good use of the social networking site that limits posts to 140 characters.

But here's a story about Columbia University students twittering a presidential forum. I like this idea. Why? Because the students were in essence sending out new story leads as the news developed. It's a good way to sharpen your news judgment, critical thinking skills and concise writing. And, it gives readers constant updates. I'm betting we'll see more of it.

Twitter has been determined distasteful in the matter of covering funerals, but I do beleive it could have a future in raw ation stories such as sports, economics, and politics. Up to the minute updates are what people are looking for in these areanas, and I beleive twitter might lead the pack in their newscoverage.

Twitter definitely works in many areas. I found myself twittering the score of the Packers Cowboys game last night to a couple of friends. Texting has no doubt become a very convenient and popular form of communication.

I think you are right about Twitter being a great tool for breaking news stories. I can think of all sorts of breaking news that I'd want constant, quick updates for.
