If newspapers don't cover news, will bloggers?

Here's an interesting story from the New York Times about a woman who wanted more information about a violent death in her Brooklyn neighborhood and turned to blogs when it wasn't thoroughly covered in the mainstream media.

As newspaper and TV staffs shrink, do you think people will find what they want to know by reading blogs? Do you get news from blogs?

I do beleive people might go to bloggers, but not often. I do not use them A. I think they are only vented opinions, B. They do not have enough facts for me C. I cannot find them.

I think you are correct in that most bloggers offer opinions, rather than news. But what about something like the story of VP candidate Sarah Palin's daughter? Did bloggers have a role in the revelations about that and other aspects of Palin's political and life stories?

Any intelligent person who is current with internet trends should be able to take blogs with a grain of salt. There are thousands and thousands of bloggers posting their takes on news and (as it seems to me) never leaving out their opinion. The only reason the story in the Times even came in to being was because of Virginia Heffernan's incredible nosiness. Discretion should be used when reading online blogs.

Some people go to blogs for news, I only go for opinion/commentary. Blogging has no 'gate keeper', such as editors, so anything can be put in a blog. Fully believing a blogger is a real reporter and giving you only the facts could lead to you being very, very wrong. And if you were to use them as a source, if could cause some trouble.
